  • From the Observer: Ever energetic, Susan Burgess never slowed down

    Not on the school board or city council. Not at church. Not on state and national boards. Not in politics. “I have two speeds – on and off,” she liked to say. “I just go all the time.”

    Burgess died this morning (Wednesday) at her home, following a three-year bout with cancer. She was 64.

  • Her Family
    Susan Burgess was born in Charleston, WV, and raised in a small town nearby, St. Albans. Susan has been married to her high school sweetheart, Patrick Burgess, MD-PhD, for 43 years.

    They are parents of 4 children, Geoff, an attorney in London, UK (married to Kristin Breuss,) Jason, a vascular surgeon in Charlotte (married to Elizabeth Donaghy Burgess,) Gillian, an attorney with the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, DC (married to Grant Mandsager,) and Colin, a student in Charlotte.

    • Susan served from 1990-1997, the last two years as chairperson, on the Charlotte Mecklenburg Board of Education

    • Susan was elected to the Charlotte City Council at Large in 1999, and has served as Mayor Pro Tem for six years

    • Appointed by then Lt. Governor Bev Perdue, Susan served for six years as Chairperson of the NC Teaching Fellows Commission

    • Susan chaired the City Council Housing and Neighborhood Development Committee
